Direct-X Media Scaling Issue

I recently switched from OpenGL (hardware) acceleration to DirectX (hardware) acceleration.
Issue- Large JPG, GIF, etc. images do not scale properly and display as black screen. This occurs both when loaded directly into a preset or loaded as a chroma key background.
The files display just fine in OpenGL mode, but must be externally down scaled to work in DirectX mode. Is this a known limitation / opportunity?
